The Backdrop of the Evolution of R-407C Refrigerant as an Alternative to R-22
Due to regulations imposed by the Montreal Protocol, production and use of HCFC-22 for air conditioning and refrigeration applications will be gradually phased out. (Note: The phase-out is because of a production ban and not a use ban).
R-22 is scheduled for phase-out in all new equipment by 2010. This means that all original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) must begin using R-22 alternatives. All new equipment built after that date will required to use R-22 replacement refrigerants, such as HFCs like R410A, R407C, or R-134A.
After the year 2010, no new R-22 refrigerant is produced for refrigeration and air conditioning services, although sales and use may continue. Use of reclaimed refrigerant will still be permissible, however, R-22 refrigerant supply may be limited.
At present, major refrigerant suppliers are still making R22 for use and sale in the air conditioning and refrigeration marketplace.
What’s next – After the Phase-Out of R-22
Because of the phase-out of R-22, several new refrigerant fluids have been developed to support the transition from HCFCs to HFCs.
The leading refrigerants in this transition are R-410A and R-407C, both of which are now available. R-134A (for chillers, large rooftops, etc) and R-404A /R-507 refrigerant will replace R-22 on some applications as well.
However, R-407C refrigerant has emerged as the most applicable alternative to R-22 refrigerant. On many years of testing and investigation, it is been found that R-407C refrigerant is recognized as a suitable alternative or replacement for R-22 in medium and high-temperature applications such as residential and light commercial air conditioning.

- R-407C refrigerant has been developed to approximate the properties of R-22 and will be used for many air condition and refrigeration applications in either new equipment or in retrofitting existing R22 installations
- R-407C must be used with polyolester (POE) oil, since its solubility with mineral oil or alkylbenzene is limited
Although, R-407C refrigerant approximates the properties of R-22, it is not suitable for use in all R-22 systems. One case, where R-407C would not be suitable would be in a flooded evaporator system. This is due to the tendency of R-407C’s components to separate (fractionate) that could greatly alter system performance.
R-407C should always be charged as a liquid because of its zeotropic nature. It will fractionate if charged as a vapor, causing poor system performance and possible, system failure.

R-407C refrigerant is been widely used in industrial freezers and can be found at local port of entry, plant freezers, freight ships, and freezer trucks. R-407C refrigerant is a non-toxic, non-flammable, class 2.2 product meeting the highest ASHRAE standard A1/A1 classification. Furthermore, R-407C refrigerant should be charged into a system with a polyolester (POE) and not with miner oil (MO) due to it being more miscible, or able to blend with the refrigerant.
